Scene 8

Scene 8

SETTING:                   In the hospital room.

AT RISE:                   ADAM is standing by MARY’s bed.

PATRICK enters the room.

PATRICK

(Looking at ADAM. In a loud voice so his mother can hear.)

The doctor says it won’t be much longer.

ADAM

(To PATRICK, on his way to the door.)

Let me know what happens.

PATRICK

(surprised)

You’re leaving?

ADAM

I have some things to take care of.

PATRICK

(anger)

What could be more important than this?

(ADAM ignores PATRICK and leaves the room.)

MARY

(waves her hand)

Let him go.

(PATRICK sits by the bed.)

MARY

It’s never been easy for him.

PATRICK

I know – I know. . . It’s just that—

MARY

(reaches out and puts her hand on PATRICK’s arm)

Just try to let go. . .

(PATRICK lowers his head. Several seconds pass.)

PATRICK

(back in the present)

So how are you feeling, mom?

MARY

Like crap!

(She knows something is wrong.)

What’s going on?

PATRICK

Nothing – we’re just waiting. You must have fallen asleep.

(They remain quiet.)

MARY

Patrick?

PATRICK

What, mom?

MARY

I saw my mother.

PATRICK

(surprised)

Grandma?

MARY

(emotional)

Right in front of me!

PATRICK

What was she doing?

MARY

Her arms were open. . .

(choking up)

To hug me!

PATRICK

(emotional)

That’s so nice, mom.

MARY

Yes.

(long pause)

Patrick?

PATRICK

Yes?

MARY

I don’t want to wake up again.

PATRICK

(alarmed)

What?

MARY

I don’t want to wake up from this.

(pauses)

Be a vegetable. . .

PATRICK

What are you saying, mom?

MARY

Promise me I won’t wake up. . .

(Inhale-Exhale)

Promise!

PATRICK

You won’t wake up, mom.

MARY

Promise me!

PATRICK

(gets closer and takes her hand)

I promise, mom. I promise.

(BLACKOUT)
