Scene 11

ACT II

Scene 11

SETTING:                   The Johnson family home, back in the

1960s.

AT RISE:                   The room is filled with people,

talking and drinking. It’s a party. PATRICK (age 8-10) is watching from the corner. The men are dressed in slacks and button-down shirts, most are wearing ties. The women are in dresses and high heels. They are all young and upwardly mobile – the great post-war generation. A man is walking around with a pitcher of margaritas, filling glasses. More people are smoking than not. Downstage, off center, two men and two women are talking in a group. MARY is there, the prettiest woman in the room.

MAN WITH PITCHER

(in background)

Margaritas? Margaritas anyone?

BILL SMITH

(part of the small group in front)

Have you heard? Reagan just called the National Guard into Berkeley to stop the riots.

MARGRET FREEMAN

(ironically)

What is this world coming to!

SANDY GROSS

They’re firing tear gas in the streets!

(pointing off to the side)

Right over the hills there. Can you believe it!

BILL

They should be firing bullets at those damn hippies!

MARY

(concerned)

Was anyone hurt?

BILL

Just a few broken head.

(laughing)

Unwashed heads!

(laughing loudly at his own joke)

MARY

They’re just children, Bill.

BILL

Children who are dodging the draft and living in communes. Free love. . . There’s nothing free about it!

MARGRET

(playing it up)

I hear the boys are burning their draft card – while the girls are burning their bras!

BILL

(offended)

Degenerates!

SANDY

(looking at MARGRET’s chest)

Not much for you to burn there, Margret.

(Both men laugh.)

MARGRET

Wouldn’t you like to know, Sandy.

(At that, she reaches behind her dress and undoes her bra. She then pulls it out from the front and begins swinging it over her head like a stripper. In a loud voice so everyone can hear.)

Come and get it, people. . . Free love! Free love, everyone!

(With a “Whoop!” she throws the bra into the crowd behind her and a man reaches up to catch it. The entire room is looking at her, some laughing, others shocked. MARGRET now hikes up her dress and begins prancing around the room – hamming it up.)

SANDY

(to MARY, glancing down at her chest)

Wouldn’t you like to take your bra off too, Mary?

MARY

(laughing)

Thanks, Sandy, but I think I’ll wait until the party’s over.

(SANDY looks crestfallen.)

MAN WITH PITCHER

Margaritas? Refills?. . .

(BLACKOUT)
