Scene 12

SETTING:                   In the hospital room.

AT RISE:                   PATRICK is sitting in a chair by the

window, facing his mother. The window is dark — it’s nighttime. NURSE JUNE enters the room with a new bag of morphine.)

PATRICK

(sits up)

What happened to the other nurse – Kelly?

NURSE JUNE

She’s off. I’m on the night shift.

(She replaces the empty bag and pushes some buttons on the pump. Quickly she glances at PATRICK.)

PATRICK

(watching her)

Is everything alright? They had a problem with that pump before.

NURSE JUNE

(a little too quick)

Everything’s fine!

(turns back to the bed and pauses)

Now isn’t she the dear one? So peaceful.

PATRICK

Yes – she hasn’t moved an inch the entire time.

NURSE JUNE

Well – she’s in God’s hands now.

PATRICK

(pauses)

Yes – yes, she is.

(NURSE JUNE walks out of the room while PATRICK remains looking at his mother.)

(BLACKOUT)
