SETTING: In the hospital hallway.
AT RISE: PATRICK is leaning back against the
wall with his arms crossed. His cell phone starts ringing.
(Pulls out the phone and checks to see who it is. He answers the phone.)
(offstage over phone)
Pat, my battery died and I lost my charger. I just got your message. What’s happening with mom?
(tilting his head back, looking up)
Mom. . . She’s. . .
(At this point he can’t continue. He simply can’t talk. The weight of what has happened has finally hit him like a punch in the gut. He tries to speak but nothing comes out. We see him struggling, pain in his eyes.)
Pat?. . . Pat?. . . Are you there, Pat?
(PATRICK still can’t talk.)
Pat?. . .
Are you all right, Pat?
Yes. . . I – I don’t know what just happened?
What’s up with mom? Is she still alive?
Yes. . . She’s unconscious now. We’re just waiting for her to stop breathing.
We’re waiting for her to die. . .
(He starts choking up again.)
Pat?. . .
Look, Evan – now’s not a good time. Can I call you back? I’ll call back a little later and explain everything – okay?
Sure, Pat – no problem. I’ll be waiting.
Thanks, Evan. Thank you. . .
(He flips the phone closed and puts it back into his pocket. He leans back against the wall and takes several deep breaths.)
