Scene 16

Scene 16

SETTING:                   The Johnson family home, back in 1960s.

AT RISE:                   Two boys are running around the room.

Young ADAM is chasing after PATRICK (age 8-10). This is not a game. ADAM wants to catch PATRICK to inflict pain.

ADAM

Get back here!

PATRICK

NO!

ADAM

Stop or I’ll beat the crap out of you!

PATRICK

MOM! MOM!. . .

ADAM

You baby!

PATRICK

MOM!. . .

ADAM

(sarcastically mimicking)

MOM!. . .

MARY

(off)

What’s going on in there?

PATRICK

Mom – Help me!. . .

ADAM

Help me!. . . Baby. . . Stop running!

PATRICK

NO!

MARY

(runs onto the stage)

Both of you stop it. Now!

(Neither one stops.)

ADAM

He was in my room!

PATRICK

Was not!

ADAM

Yes, you were – you liar!

PATRICK

You’re the liar!

MARY

I said stop it!

(ADAM finally catches PATRICK and throws him on the floor. He jumps on top and sits on PATRICK’s chest.)

ADAM

Liar!

MARY

Adam – get off of him!

PATRICK

Get off!

(They struggle. One of PATRICK’s hands breaks free and he starts swinging at his brother. ADAM is also swinging and his fist smacks PATRICK on the side.)

PATRICK

(cries out)

Ooowwww!

MARY

(Beside herself – doesn’t know what to do.)

STOP IT!

(They still don’t stop.)

MARY

(Finally gives up and sits on the floor. She looks dazed.)

Oh. . . I think I’m going to faint.

(She lies down and appears to pass out.)

(Both boys stop what they’re doing to look at her. There is a brief moment of concern, empathy even, but then they turn away and the begin fighting again. ADAM catches PATRICK’s hand and pins it down like the other one. He leans menacingly over his younger brother.)

ADAM

(his face right over PATRICK’s)

Here it comes — baby. . .

(A large glob of spit drops out of his mouth and lands on PATRICK’s face.)

PATRICK

NO!

(BLACKOUT)
